Nevertheless I Live
We explore Galatians 2:19-21 to reveal the difference between living under religious obligation versus living in the freedom Christ purchased with His sacrifice. Through a detailed examination of our identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, we look at how true salvation frees us from both sin's power and religious bondage.
• The law of Moses created a continual consciousness of sin requiring endless sacrifices
• Christ offered Himself once as the perfect sacrifice that fully satisfied sin's requirement
• When we believe in Christ, we are crucified with Him - our old sinful self dies
• True Christian living is "not I, but Christ lives in me" - His life expressing through us
• "Rededication" is an unbiblical concept that keeps believers trapped in performance-based religion
• God has no memory of forgiven sin - it's removed as far as east is from west
• Salvation is received by faith, not achieved through religious effort
If you're being drawn to true salvation today, simply call upon Jesus right now. Let the belief in your heart come out in words and ask to be born again this very minute. Thank you for helping us reach people worldwide with this message. Visit gbtministries.com for service information or to contact us at redeemingthelost@icloud.com.
NEW BOOK! I'm pleased to say that we have completed a new book that has been years in the making. The Ten Shirot: Songs of Redemption looks at ten songs that were sung through pivotal times in Scripture. It's an examination of the redemption of Jesus, of worship, and of Scripture in a way that we believe you probably haven't seen before. Check it out at https://a.co/d/0a4KIooL .

Hello, greetings and welcome to the Redeeming Love Bible broadcast. My name is Phil Duddy, evangelist with Grace Baptist Tabernacle of King, north Carolina. Very, very much a blessing to have you with me on the program today. As always, reach out to us at redeemingthelost at icloudcom. Going to the book of Galatians today. So come with me to Galatians, chapter 2, and we are going to start in Galatians 2.19, and we are going to get into verse 20, but let's look at 2.19 first.
Speaker 1:The Word of God reads this way For I, through the law, am dead to the law that I might live unto God, and this is speaking of the law of Moses. And to make a very, very, very long, deep, rich and fulfilling study short here, because there are so many teachings here, there are so many messages that you could preach here and there's so much value in studying the law. As a born-again person, you know reading the law and reading the prophets in light of the New Testament and in light of what Jesus has done and what Jesus has fulfilled, it's a tremendous, tremendous, tremendous blessing. But to make a long account short, today, the law required sacrifice. There was a continual in the days under the law. There was a continual consciousness, there was a continual awareness of sin. And if you were going to follow the Lord, if you're going to relate to the Lord, if you were going to be one of the people of God, there had to be sacrifice. Because sin had to be sacrifice, because sin would inevitably and invariably come up, sin would come out and that sin required by the Word of God, under the law, by the Word of God, this sin required sacrifice. The sin required a death. The sin required a shedding of blood. The sin required all of these things and there was a priesthood that would minister in that way and the priesthood would offer the sacrifices and they would offer the sacrifices on behalf of the people.
Speaker 1:And Paul here, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, he's talking about I, through the law, am dead to the law that I might live unto God and my friend. That's only possible in the Lord Jesus Christ, because we can find it in parts of the book of Galatians. We can find a lot of it in the book of Hebrews. Hallelujah, jesus Christ offered himself. Jesus Christ offered his body and his blood and he laid down his life. He both offered himself and he was offered. He was a pleasing offering to God. He's the Lamb of God, to go from Hebrews to the book of John. He's the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. World.
Speaker 1:Jesus Christ fulfilled this continual need for sacrifice because he offered himself one time. He offered his life one time, his blood and his body one time. He did that one time on behalf of all of us and the Lord, god Almighty. He laid sin on Jesus Christ. He made sin to be Jesus Christ. If you look at the Day of Atonement, it'll blow you away. The Lord, in a way, sort of laid his hands on Jesus Christ and he made Jesus to be sin. He made Jesus to be sin. He made Jesus to be my sin. He made Jesus to be your sin. He made Jesus to be the sin of the entire world, past, present and future. He made Jesus to be sin and the precious Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. In order to do that, he died. In order to do that, the blood was shed. In order to do that, the blood was offered to the Lord. The Lord offered blood to the Lord. Lord offered blood to the Lord.
Speaker 1:Because my friend, later on in Galatians it says you know, like if there could have been a law that gave life. You know, long story short, there would have been. Yeah, I can actually read that it's on the second page here. It's a law, then, against the promises of God. God forbid. For if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. So the law of Moses was never designed.
Speaker 1:The law of Moses was never designed to truly save anyone, to truly purge the conscience of sin, to truly, completely, utterly deal with sin. The law, which is holy and given by God, was never designed to do that. The law always looked forward to Jesus. Every day that went by under the law of Moses looked forward to the day of the cross and ultimately, the day of the resurrection, because there, at that time, at that point in history, and through Jesus, the sin problem was finally dealt with. Because there was no there, there was never going to be a sacrifice again. There was never going to be a higher sacrifice. There's never going to be a better sacrifice. There was never going to be an equivalent sacrifice.
Speaker 1:That it that jesus christ, hallelujah. When he said it was finished, it is finished. He took away the sin of the world and then, with that in mind, let's go to verse 20. I am crucified with Christ and this is presented as a good thing, this is presented as good news, this is presented as rejoicing, this is presented as a thing to be thankful for. Christ was crucified. I am crucified with him and my friend, the cross was a tool of execution and that execution was a final thing and it was a public thing and it was an open thing.
Speaker 1:Jesus Christ, he wasn't crucified behind closed doors. No, he was crucified. He was out in the open. He was raised up, he was lifted up. People were gathered around and people could see him and people talked with him. I mean, people interacted with him on the cross. I mean people were crucified next with him and there was interaction there.
Speaker 1:People would mock and people would scorn and people would ridic there, and people would mock and people would score and people would ridicule and people would say, well, if he comes down from the cross, well, you know, then then we'll believe on him, if he comes down from the cross, or, you know, let's see if god saves him from the cross. Or is he calling out on elijah, or is he doing this or doing that? You know, there was. There was all this stuff going on all around the cross. There was one thief that was reviling the Lord. There was another thief who was believing on the Lord. Hallelujah, the Lord is saying you know, while he's being nailed to the cross, father, forgive them. They know not what they do, but the point is it was public, it was open, it was not private and it was final.
Speaker 1:A crucifixion was an execution. It was a very, very public execution. It was a very, very humiliating execution. It was a very, very painful execution. At the end of the day, it was an execution and executions are final. And Jesus died, definitively died on that cross. But oh, my, oh, my, my, my. In the process, the father made him to be sin. The father turned his face away from Jesus and there was a transaction that happened there. Jesus did that for you.
Speaker 1:And Paul is saying here I am crucified with Christ. This old, dying, rotten flesh, the ego and the pride and the arrogance and the hostility and the ungodly fear and the murder and the lust and the drunkenness and the blasphemy, all of that which comes out of the flesh comes out of the flesh, comes out of the flesh and you know it in your life. You know the way your flesh expresses itself in your life. You know if you're prone to lie. You know if you're prone to the lust of the flesh. You know if you're prone to avarice and greed. You know if you've got an ego problem. If you've got a pride, you know how it comes out. If you've got a murderous sort of temper, you know how it comes out. But Paul, a man who is in Christ, a man who has met the Lord, a man who has encountered the Lord, a man who has been born again, a man who has been born again, a man who has been spirit-filled, he is saying and rejoicing I am crucified with Christ.
Speaker 1:Nevertheless, I live Because your personal, private and public sin does deserve death. In the eyes of God, the only judge who truly matters, your sin deserves death. God knows that your sin deserves death, hallelujah. Oh. In the old days, under the law, it deserved death. Folks would sacrifice bulls, folks would sacrifice goats. Folks would sacrifice lambs, folks would sacrifice doves. So folks would sacrifice rams. There were drink offerings. There were all sorts of offerings, given, given, given all sorts of offerings. Sin deserved death back then. Sin deserves death now. That hasn't changed.
Speaker 1:But my friend Jesus Christ. He died that you might live. He died that you might live. I am crucified with Christ, oh, my friend, jesus Christ, he was crucified for me and I am crucified with him.
Speaker 1:Nevertheless, I live Yet. Not I and my friend. This is something only the Lord, god Almighty, can do. This is why every salvation is a miracle. Nevertheless, I live yet. Not I, but Christ liveth in me. The very Spirit of Christ, the very Holy Ghost lives in me Because, my friend, at every salvation, oh, there's life and there's celebration, and there's newness of life, and the eternal life is given and a very, very holy, you might call it.
Speaker 1:A transaction takes place, but before that life, there's a death. The crucifixion of Christ is applied to you, the death of Christ is applied to you. That is, you know, you die with Christ on the cross, oh, my friend, and you are risen with Christ. Christ rose again first, so that every man, woman and child who believes on him, we are risen with him. And the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. So, my friend, we don't live. We live in the flesh, but we don't live through the flesh. That's a good way to say it. The flesh is crucified. We can go to the book of Romans for that too.
Speaker 1:We reckon ourselves to be dead to sin. Dead to sin Because our sin was answered for by what Jesus Christ did on that cross. So we are dead to sin. Jesus Christ died. Once we are dead to sin and we are risen with Jesus Christ, we're dead to sin, we're not alive to sin.
Speaker 1:Oh, we used to be under the bondage. We used to be under the weight. We used to be under the bondage. We used to be under the weight. We used to be under the consequence. We used to be under the heaviness. We used to be under the torment. We used to be under the guilt. We used to be under sin. We were slaves to sin, but we died, and a dead slave is no longer a slave. We died the death of Christ. We share in it and, oh, my friend, we also share in the resurrection. We're dead to sin.
Speaker 1:Sin satisfied, sin's done. In the eyes of God, sin is answered for. Sin satisfied sin's done. In the eyes of God, sin is answered for, and in the eyes of God, oh, sin is no longer remembered. If you're in Christ. Today, your sin is no longer remembered by God. God forgot it. Oh, it's in the depths of the sea. It's separated from you as far as the east is from the west. In the eyes of God, it's like it never happened. It's like you never were a liar, you never were a murderer, you never were a thief, you never did blaspheme the lord, you never. You never were a drunk, you never were a drug user, you never were. Uh, you know, uh, whatever years, however, your sin came out. Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life everybody has some combination of those in the way it comes out. But the point is it's over and it's forgotten.
Speaker 1:If you're in Christ, the old slave to sin died, and the life which you live now, you live it in the flesh, but not through the flesh. You live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, verse 21. I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness came by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Oh, all those sacrifices, everything that the Lord gave Moses, that we have recorded, everything, so many instances in the law and in the prophets. Oh, they look forward to a Messiah. They look forward to Jesus. They didn't see him yet in their day, but they knew that the Lord was coming. They knew that the Messiah was coming and they knew that the Messiah was going to take care of the sin and the Messiah was going to fulfill the law and bless God.
Speaker 1:Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Lord made flesh. The Lord himself took on flesh and he walked among among us and he fulfilled his own law. He supplied his own blood, he laid down his own life. My friend, it's finished. My friend, it's finished.
Speaker 1:To go back to verse 20, the flesh you know the life which I now live. That's present tense. In the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Christ lives in me, that Christ living in me, that's just simple present tense. My friend, don't be a slave to your past, don't be a slave to your old sin, because the blood of Christ answers it all. The blood of Christ covers it all. The blood of Christ, you're completely, utterly forgiven and you are purged from your old sins. You can flip on over to the book of Hebrews and see that you are purged from sin and that's something that the law couldn't do, but it's something that Christ does for every man, woman and child who believes on him.
Speaker 1:And, my friend, if you're yet in your sin, because it's one of the most terrible traps of the enemy to continually try through your own work, through your own effort, to make your sin okay, to make your sin go away, to make your sin somehow atone for it by yourself. But, my friend, a lot of Baptists call it rededication. You go to church and you go to church and you go to church and everything seems good, and then you fall away for a while and then you come back and you rededicate yourself and go to church and go to church and go to church and do your devotions, do your devotions, do your devotions, give your tithe, give your tithe, give your tithe, give your work, give your work, give you work. Then you fall away again, and sometimes it's for a few years, and then you come back and you rededicate it.
Speaker 1:My friend, that's not a biblical thing, that's something that men came up with, that's not something that God gave us. Something that God gave us. And, my friends, the real danger of that is that people tend to believe that salvation and the Christian life is what we do, and that's not biblical. That's not biblical and it's a very, very, very dangerous doctrine.
Speaker 1:And if you're caught up in that, I want you to hear something. I want you to hear something in love. I want you to hear a call to life. I want you to hear a call to be born again and be saved, because Jesus Christ went to a cross. Jesus Christ laid down his life. Jesus Christ became sin. Jesus Christ laid down his life. Jesus Christ became sin. Jesus Christ shed his blood. Jesus Christ said it is finished. Jesus Christ said that salvation is by grace and through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast.
Speaker 1:And, my friend, the instant you believe in Jesusesus christ, he does a marvelous work in your life. And so, my friend, are you seeing that you're in your sin? Maybe you've done a lot of religious work, but you're yet in your sin. My friend, I was there too, and the lord plucked me out, and the lord showed that to me. My friend, I was there too and the Lord plucked me out, and the Lord showed that to me. And maybe he's showing that to you today too, by the foolishness of preaching, by this message. The Lord's showing you that and you go to church all the time, you read your Bible and you give your money and you do your work, and maybe you're even in a place of ministry, in a place of leadership, but, my friend, at the end of the day, you're yet in your sin.
Speaker 1:You've got a lust that no amount of work, no amount of dedication or rededication can ever deal with, no amount of reading and memorization, no amount of personal discipline and effort. It's always there and if you let your guard down for a minute, it just rips out of you. That lust comes out, that temper comes out, that pride comes out, that ego comes out. My friend, that's a religious bondage and a religious torment that God doesn't want you to be in. Hallelujah, will you believe on the name of Jesus Christ, because he said it is finished.
Speaker 1:My friend, I went to a cross for you. I became your sin. I laid down my life and shed my blood for you. My life and shed my blood for you, because no law, even the law that I gave, even the law that I gave to Moses for the people of Israel, even the law that came directly from me, says a holy God to you. The law that came from me was never designed. It was designed to bring people to Jesus. It was not designed to utterly completely deal with sin. It was designed to bring people to me. It was designed to bring people to Jesus. It was designed to show people that sin comes out, to show people that sin has a deadly consequence, to show people that sin requires sacrifice and sin requires death and sin requires blood. It was designed to bring people to me because I gave my only begotten son as my sacrificial lamb on your behalf, to do what you could never do and what the law was never designed to do To take away your sin, to give you a new life, to give you a new heart, to give you the mind of Christ, to write my law on the inside, not on tables of stone, not in books, but in your heart.
Speaker 1:That's something I do. That's not something you do, that's something you receive and that's something you do. That's something you receive and that's something you live in and you walk in, but that's not something that you do. Oh, my friend, be born again and be saved today, and if that's what the Lord's calling you to, that's what the Lord's drawing you to, I want you to very simply call upon Jesus, call upon the name of the Lord. Let the belief, let the yes that's in your heart come out into some words and ask him to be born again, right this very minute. Hallelujah and church. I pray that you're encouraged by this, that you're built up by this, because God has no memory of your sin and there's no reason for you to be in bondage to sin anymore. You've been adopted. You've been made a rightful heir of Christ. You've been made a king and a priest, and a saint and a beloved child of the king. You're a bondservant to Christ. You're no longer a slave to sin. So, my friends, cleave to the Lord. Love the Lord, worship the Lord. Hallelujah, amen. I pray that this be an encouragement to you and my friend.
